New Metformin–Citric Acid Pharmaceutical Molecular Salt: Improving Metformin Physicochemical Properties

Crystal engineering and, more specifically, the development of multicomponent materials has become an effective technique to rationally modify important physicochemical properties solids, such as solubility and thermal stability. In this work, in order overcome some problems that metformin a pharmaceutical, new base salt with citric acid (MTF–CIT) been developed, which improves stability (two-fold) compared (MTF). A complete characterization crystalline form through PXRD, DSC, SCXRD, FT–IR was conducted ensure purity phase provide comprehensive view its behavior, thus correlating improvement crystal structure. The MTF–CIT crystallizes monoclinic P21/c1 spacegroup z′ = 1. Intermolecular interactions found structure simulated morphology suggest steric protection effect on ion leads enhancement several orders magnitude MTF, well due exposition polar groups biggest facets, making promising pharmaceutical solid.
